IEEE 1901 adopted as official powerline standard – devolo will soon have the first standard-compliant dLAN® adapters
As an international technical standardisation centre, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has defined a new powerline standard with IEEE 1901. As a member of the IEEE, Aachen, Germany-based devolo AG, leading manufacturer of powerline solutions, has actively contributed to developing and defining the new standard. IEEE 1901 is an important step for sustainable further development of the powerline market; in the near future, devolo will bring the first products compliant with the new standard to market as the dLAN® 500 product family with a transfer rate of 500 Mbps. Of course, the new 500 Mbps adapters are also backwards compatible with the 200 Mbps dLAN® products currently on the market.
Defining future-proof standards is one of the most important tasks in technical development. To guarantee this for the future of powerline technology as well, Aachen, Germany-based devolo AG has actively collaborated on the new powerline standard IEEE 1901 as a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an internationally active institute and globally accepted technical standardisation centre. IEEE 1901 defines the data communication over power lines and, as a new high-speed standard, opens the door to even faster data exchange within the four walls of one‘s own home: IEEE 1901 products enable a transfer rate of up to 500 Mbps. Enough bandwidth, for example, to transmit four HDTV streams in the building simultaneously. The new standard is also essential for in-house distribution of VDSL as well as FTTH connections (Fibre to the Home, glass fibre connection). In addition to the advantage of higher speed, the new adapters also offer full backwards compatibility with the current 200 Mbps dLAN® powerline adapters.
The cornerstone for IEEE 1901 was laid back in 2009 at the IEEE conference in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, the standard has actively been fine-tuned by the members of the work group, including devolo. IEEE 1901 defines the future of powerline communication and specifies the technical development for the coming years. Designed as a uniform, international standard, it also provides for interoperability of powerline products of various manufacturers. Future standards such as HomePlug AV2 are already being developed according to the principles of the IEEE 1901.
"IEEE 1901 is a big, important step for the powerline market," remarks Heiko Harbers, CEO of devolo AG. He adds, "Only uniform standards can open markets and let them grow. They create trust among dealers and consumers and are the basis for successful products. devolo has not only actively collaborated on the IEEE 1901 standard, but also made sure that this standard is backwards compatible with the present devolo products of the dLAN® 200 AV series."
